1 Scavengers on Fri Jun 20, 2014 8:22 pm

First topic message reminder :

Clean up was slow in the weeks after the battle for Earth had concluded. The rubble that remained of the citadel was still being picked over by many. Not all of them were the good guys. Commander Shepard's people had already come through and collected the body, leaving everything else as it was. They wanted no part of it. Not even to make it a memorial.
At that moment a group of Salarians were poking through the rubble, scowling deeply. "No." One them said to the other. "This is not the area. It wouldn't have been here."
"Quiet, fool." The other hissed. He was looking in the other direction, frowning deeply. "The Quarians are here. We don't want to tip them off. We can't afford to lose this to them. It's too much. Do you hear me?!"

"So how do we fix this?" Derius asked, not sure how to go about changing a life that been led the same way for over twenty five years. "What can I do to make this right for you and my sister, Victus? My mother has already completed the burial she wished for for my father. He is...gone."

"Asari." Brutal said, cringing when an asari woman slammed a menu down in front of Ceres and simply walked away from the table as if he didn't exist. "They are the whores and the krogan are the bullies. Next insult please, ma'am." He went on with a warm smile.

Victus leaned forward and held his head in his hands. "She was always so much smarter than your father and I... Vivica was always the one to get us out if trouble, at a cost." He looked up at Derius and his eyes seemed so much older than they had only a day previous. "You need to find a non Turian doctor and have them take a look at Orinia. We can't trust any medical care your mother had arranged."

"Asari are knowledge, and Krogan strength, what do humans offer the galactic community?" Ceres countered before holding the menu up to hide her face.

"That would mean taking her off world, Victus. You realize that, don't you?" Derius could do little more than stare into primarch's golden eyes. "Even if we were to fix this mess you are in...she would be a galaxy away. How can you ask me to do that?"

"Heart." Brutal said, his hand pulling down her menu so that she was forced to look him in the eyes. "Well some of us anyway. I'm guess not a certain blue eyed blonde haired man." He added gently. "We should talk about that."

"Because I love her." Victus replied simply. "I would rather live my life behind bars knowing she is at least alive and well, then suffer freedom without her." He added with a heavy sigh. "I want what is best for Orinia, not myself."

Ceres' eyes grew a little wider before she narrowed them at Brutal. "I don't know what you mean." She answered quickly.

"I'm going to have to lie to her too." Derius said softly, barely able to speak above a whisper. "To keep her from coming back until things are safe...until mother cannot hurt her anymore...I'm going to have to lie to my sister about you. She'll never get better on her own if I don't." He was on the verge of tears as he said this, his own heart breaking for the man he'd always thought would one day be his brother. "You know that too. Don't you?"

"There's about a dozen of his look alikes in the clinic below deck that would probably argue with you." Brutal said pointedly. He turned his head, glaring at the turian chef. "Hey! Where's the nachos?! Don't ignore me over here!" He shouted.

Victus nodded his head only once. "You know what the last thing was that we spoke about? The wedding. She didn't want a grand ceremony, just something small. She was conflicted with wanting that, because she thought it wasn't what your father would have wanted for her. Orinia deserved better, than Vivia as a mother. You both did."

"Humans all look alike to me." Ceres lied, smirking a little when they were onto given service after she herself called for it.

"The Spirits..." Derius stopped speaking suddenly finding it hard to swallow. "You know something? I don't believe in the spirits anymore. I don't think there's anything left to believe in. The Reapers suddenly don't seem so bad." He got to his feet and turned his back on the other man. "Garrus Vakarian will be here soon. He will get you out. I will take care of my sister as I always have. We will not see you again, Primarch."

"Ahhh!!!!" Brutal's head fell back and he groaned loudly. "I really hate this place. I like turians and all but I hate this place. That guy is a...non nacho loving...not" He ground out. "And we don't all look alike." He took  his hair out of the ponytail and leaned across the table so she could see it. "Do I have blonde hair? Seriously? Those guys you were shooting were tiny compared to me. You're judging. That's not fair."

"Tell her I'm dead." Victus whispered. "I... Don't want her to think I intentionally broke her heart." He added.

Ceres spent a long few seconds simply staring across at Brutal. Of course she she had noticed how different he looked to all of them, to Jared. "Why do you care what a suit rat thinks anyway?" She finally whispered.

Derius didn't answer. In a few hours Garrus and his wife would arrive and give the primarch word that the young man had had his sister transported off world and hadn't given anyone word where they were going.

"Partly because you're not wearing a suit, partly because you shot humans, and partly because I want to know the reason." Brutal answered, leaning back to but his hair back into a ponytail.

Victus couldn't form any words, not even for a war hero like Garrus. He simply stared at the wall, wishing to right thing wasn't eating him alive inside.

Ceres watched Brutal tie his hair back until her eyes had begun to wander, taking his facial features in one at a time. There was a secret that pressed down on the young woman that she hadn't told Jared, it was something she had ran from for a long time. "Did Mimic send you to take me back?" She asked at last.

It would take Victus six months to get a handle on things on Palaven. He would be able to prove that he had not hurt either female. But he was not able to prove that Vivica had been responsible for everything. With Quientus' children gone, it was like nothing had happened at all. The wicked woman was back in the social spot light and things went on without Orinia and Derius. It was as if they had never existed.

"Actually, no." Brutal said, shaking his head. He tried to grab his menu when the asari stopped by again but she ignored him. "Damn it all. I'm going to starve to death, aren't I?"

Victus completely submerged himself in his work, focusing on rebuilding their society, along with enlisting people to research alternate methods of transport to the mass relays. He spent every moment working until he collapsed from exhaustion, as it was the only way to keep his thoughts from the woman who would have been his wife.

"A big guy like you?" Ceres snorted as she again hid her face behind her own menu.

"You're going to have to get a wife." His new assistant said, trying to make sure all the files on Victus' desk were situated just so. Vandrel knew how lonely his boss had become and nothing short of a great war or a wife was going to change that. "You've got to get out of this office and that's just the way to do it. Don't you think?"

Brutal couldn't help but laugh at this. "All right. Fair enough. But seriously. I think they're trying to starve me. I haven't had decent food since I arrived here on Omega." He groaned, shaking his head. "Why do all aliens here think I'm out to get them? Spectre status aside they treat me like I'm a Reaper or something."

"No." Victus replied bluntly. "Why must a man have a wife to have people accept him? I've tried twice now, and it had ended in misery. I don't believe in the human fixation of three being a lucky number."

Silver eyes suddenly peeked over the top of their menu. "You're a spectre?" Ceres asked, her slightly narrowed gaze betraying the fact she wasn't quite ready to believe this little factoid.

"It's turian tradition and it makes people feel better about their primarch. It makes you seem less harsh." Vandrel said with a shrug. "A woman's touch makes everything seem better. By the way, did you hear they are close to nominating Quientus' wife as the new councilor? It will be first time we've had a female for a position that high. All that's needed is your signature."

Brutal nodded. "I have my own badge and everything." He smiled gently, showing it to her. "After Commander Shepard they were much more willing to let humans into that role. There's only three of us so far but I'd like to think we're making progress." He added cheerfully. "Why? Do you hate those guys too?"

916 Re: Scavengers on Mon Aug 25, 2014 10:47 pm

"Then we shall still be waiting for a female to take that position." Victus replied icily. "I will never be signing those papers. To give that vile woman a position of such power would be beyond irresponsible of me!"

"That would all depend on who you are about to tell me the third one of you was." Ceres replied, pausing to call the Asari over and ask for a large glass of Turian brandy.

His assitant gave him a wide eyed look and nodded his head. "If that's the way you feel but you'll have to tell the council that. It's a good thing we're planning a trip to view the new citadell next week. I'm thinking you need a breather, sir. You're attitude is terrible. Don't you think?"

"You're mocking me." Brutal was pouting. He stuck his tongue out at the asari who one again ignored him. "Fine. I wasn't hungry. I'll keep my credits." He snorted, grabbing the menu and tossing it at the blue skinned woman. It helped nothing but it made him feel better.

"I hear the doctor in the clinic is looking for a secretary." Victus snapped, making it all too clear with that hint that he was not beyond firing the poor fool for having an honest opinion.

"It isn't hard to mock a man who acts like a petulant child." Ceres replied coolly now she no longer had her menu to hide behind.

"I'll start your packing." Vandrel said in a cheerful tone, quick to get up from his seat and even quicker to exit.
It wasn't long before they were on their way to the new Citadel with several other turian dignitaries. The former wife of Quientus was included in this group. Right then she was seated across from Victus, smiling at him. "Well, I never thought we'd be seeing one another like this. How are you?" She purred.

Brutal grinned at this. "True enough." He nodded. "I suppose I deserve that. But hey, when you're get desperate." He teased. "Convince them to feed me and maybe I'll stop being so annoying. It's worth a shot at least. Right?"

"My day just got a lot worse." Victus replied coldly, proving that his mood had never recovered since he had lost all he held dear. "Right now, I find myself longing for a reaper attack. You?"

Ceres rolled her eyes and sighed heavily as she called the waitress over once more.
The Asari again seemed to ignore a brutal and was openly flirting with the woman she didn't exactly recognise as Quarian.

"Fantastic." Vivica purred, her cool blue eyes flashing with warning. "I couldn't be better. I mean I'm so close to getting my husband's council seat, I have my friends, a new husband. What more could I ask for?"

Brutal sat watching the whole exchange, shaking his head. "She's proving my point, you know." He said to Ceres. "You're not helping things either, by the way. You're not even trying to talk her down."

"A heart? A conscience? Self respect perhaps?" Victus spat before he could help himself.

Ceres thanked the other woman who then walked away to place Brutal's order. "What is it you think I am not helping?" Ceres asked, blinking innocently.

"Why would I want any of those things?" Vivica asked. She leaned in close to him, her lips brushing his before he could protest. "I got everything I wanted without a single one of them." She added with a wicked laugh. "And you can't do a damn thing about it."

Brutal shook his head. "Nevermind." He poked at the table with his forked, his forehead etched with deep lines of thought. " did you manage to lose the suit. The last quarian I had the privilege of fighting beside told me you guys are decades if not a century away from taking that off."

Victus clucked his tongue and wagged a finger at Vivica. "My love, do you forget who's approval you need to sit on the council?"

Ceres had been waiting for that question, and still wasn't sure she was ready to answer it. "They are." She confirmed rather evasively. "Does it disgust you to think of all of them taking their helmets off?" It was odd the way Ceres spoke, like she didn't consider herself Quarian.

"I've waited a long time for you to call me that." Vivica breathed, shaking her head. "But you know what? I won't need a nomination from you if you are dead. I think you have figured out by now that I am exceptionally good at making that happen." She purred.

"If they look like you, I see nothing wrong with it." Brutal said honestly. "You are beautiful, Miss Quarian."

"And I am exceptionally good at avoiding death while those around eke drop like flies." Victus breathed. "I would give my last breath to watch you die though, mother."

Ceres' amethyst cheeks burned with colour and she finally seemed lost for words. Only for a moment. She wasn't going to fall for that again. "I think my maybe Omega had rotted your brain, Mr. Human."

"I'm not a mother anymore." Vivica reminded him, getting up and waving to another group of turians.
At the citadell things were a little more lively than they had been before. All races were here and they were working together in the way that Shepard had dreamed of.
Victus' assistant stopped by a garage to rent a car for them and that was where he would get his first glimpse of a young woman he had never hoped to see again.
Orinia was leaned over a sky car, grease smeared on her face. When she saw the turians enter she stood up and made her way to them, a smile on her face. "Is there something I can do for you gentlemen?"

"Nah. Porn rots my brain. Omega isn't bothering it so much." Brutal said with a chuckle. "Video games don't help and neither does being honest with people. It always gets me in trouble. So, I take it you don't like a good compliment?"

Victus stopped, frozen in place for a moment before he regained his composure. It couldn't be her, not like this. Even if it was... He was supposed to be dead.

"In my experience, people only compliment when they want something, so it's hard to take it as the truth." Ceres sniffed.

"Are you okay?" Orinia moved closer to Victus, looking him over. She held out a grease covered rag and then yanked it back, laughing at herself. "Sorry about that. You look like you're about to pass out or you've seen a ghost. Can I offer you a seat? Or maybe you're just here to rent a car then sit down..." She blushed, the beautiful pink returning to her skin. "Maybe you want me to shut up now..."

"I want nachos. Can you help me with that?" Brutal asked, frowning at the plate of food the asari sat in front of him. "Otherwise you are free and clear little quarian."

Victus swallowed a few times, then just about managed to shake his head. He felt like a teenager all over again. "D-do you have a name?" He stammered.

"I'll ask for some to be sent to you on my way out." Ceres replied as she rose to her feet, taking Brutal's words to mean that was all it was going to take for her to get back to her rusted ship.
