So slow to catch on

Jill gave Leon a little push, then smiled. "Believe me, these things can last days." She assured him. "Besides, I want the chance to grill you myself."
"You doubt my suitability as a mother?" Claire asked thinly, folding her arms across her chest.

"Oh I don't know... Was I a good girl?" Jill asked, watching Chris from beneath her dark lashes now. Her heart pounded just being close to him now the fear had dissipated somewhat. Until she got her memory back, Jill would be falling in love with Chris all over again.

"That depends on your definition." Chris purred, holding open the passanger door of their car for her. "If you ask me, no. But Leon and the rest of the world say yes so...yeah. We'll go with that one."

Jill felt her cheeks burning again, Chris' meaning more than obvious to her. "Well... I guess that means we had fun, right?" She asked as she slid into the passenger seat of the car. "Leon... You mentioned him earlier. Who is he?"

"My sister's boyfriend." Chris told her as he got in and started the car. "You were mad at him for some stuff that went on. But...after we found the babies...I don't think you were mad anymore."

"Babies?" Jill asked, her head beginning to throb all over again, causing her to rub at her temples.

"Damn it. I'm doing it again." Chris sighed, pulling out of the parking space and turning onto the road. "I said we were going to keep it simple."

"If we're keeping it simple... I guess we can't really talk about my past, huh?" Jill asked with a slight chuckle.

"That one is simple. Your mom died at your birth, your dad was a royal bastard and at your first funeral I kicked his ass." Chris said that as if it were a simple concept. He was also smiling at the memory. "I still don't regret it."

"Wait... Back up there, first funeral?" Jill asked, the expression she wore very much like that of a child trying to solve its first algebra equation.

Chris groaned, his knuckles whitening on the steering wheel. "Again, that's something for us to talk about later when you get closer to remember everything. That's another story I really hate to tell."

Jill sighed heavily and pulled her knees up to her chest where she then rested her chin on them. "Why does it feel... Like bad things always happen to me?" She whispered.

"Us." Chris corrected as he pulled into the parking lot and turned off the car. "Bad things happen to us. But hey, we have each other. The rest of it doesn't matter as long as that's true."

"But if I had a funeral... That's means..." She closed her eyes, trying to wrap her head around the things she was learning. "If I was dead... How am I here? Why did I wake up in the morgue? And what babies did we find?!"

"Someone wanted me to think you were dead so I wouldn't come looking for you. And the babies belonged to my sister...the little girl passed away..." Chris tried to explain. "What was the other question?"

"Someone who?!" Jill demanded. "Who would even care who I am, let alone go to the trouble of kidnapping me and faking my death?!" Evidently, her usually cool temper was also lost for the time being.

Chris was now the one to rub his temples. "I've already told you, we were some of the world's best. We were doing everything we could to save the world and there were people...one man in particular...that didn't like that."

"Then why only fake my death? Why not just kill me?" Jill questioned, obviously oblivious to the child she had carried, or the virus that had saved her from death this second time.

"Jill...I'm telling you. That subject is way too deep for right now." Chris groaned, banging his head on the steering wheel. "You're way too valuable to kill. Me on the other hand..."

"Have a sister, and a newborn nephew." Jill finished. "You said it yourself, I do t even have any kind of parents." She added, opening the passenger door. "You've got things all wrong. I'm not valuable."

Chris caught her wrist before she could get out of the car. "Jill, you're kidding yourself if you think you're not worth anything. You are my everything. My reason for living. If you weren't with me, I'd fall apart. That makes you worth more than gold, babe."

Though Chris had said many beautiful things to her over the years, even if she remembered them, this would have topped the list. Before she could help it a fat tear rolled down her cheek, though she was making no effort to pull away from Chris, or hide the fact he had moved her to tears. "What if I never remember? You'll never have the woman you loved back."

"Oh yes I do." Chris said now reaching out to move his roughed fingers over her cheeks. "She's right here. You are Jill Valentine no matter what. That will never change. I'll love you even if you decide you don't want to stay with me. You are my world, no matter what you remember about it."

Jill didn't shy aware from Chris' touch as his fingers brushed her smooth cheeks, though she still felt she barely knew him, she trusted this man. "I want to earn the right to be your world, not just expect it because of who I was to you." She breathed.

"Who you are." Chris corrected, his own lips now a breath away from hers.

Jill could feel Chris' breath on her own full lips, and she couldn't help but incline her head slightly, able to think of nothing but perhaps remembering the taste of him. Her body seemed to remember him even if her mind didn't. "Is this what happened when you drove me home all those years ago?" She breathed finally, smiling a little.

"Before or after you hit me in the nose?" Chris chuckled. "Actually, I told you that if you didn't have sex with me right then and there I was going to die. You told me I was full of shit and you wouldn't touch me with a ten foot pole."

"I still had sex with you that night, didn't I?" Jill asked, laughing softly, though she didn't pull away just yet. "I guess I always had a thing for hot guys who cared enough to feed me a line."

Chris laughed at this and shook his head. "You always said it was the uniform. All the guys fed you a line. Mine were always just more...persistent." He added.

"I imagine it was what was under the uniform that got me all hot and bothered." Jill purred, grinning at Chris before finally climbing out of the car.

Chris threw back his head and laughed at this. Whether she knew it or not, this was his Jill.
He followed her into the restaurant, greeting the people they'd come to know and love over the past year. He said nothing about Jill not being herself. He knew she needed to feel it long before she realized it.
