Thicker than Water

Alex Chambers stood on the helicopter landing pad his fingers pressed to his forehead to block out the morning sun. He was dancing from one foot to the other, unable to hide his excitement.
"I see them!" He shouted back to his mother, who was standing near the entrance with a medical team. None of them knew what kind of shape their heroes would return to them in but Alex didn't seem to care. Already he was hopping up and down waving at the chopper as it drew closer. He cheered when Chris Redfield waved to him and repeated the action when Jill Valentine did the same. But as the helicopter touched down his smile began to fade. Not everyone he'd hoped to see was stepping out.
"What happened?" Rebecca Chambers soon came to stand beside her son, her lips set in a thin line as she looked from Chris to Jill. "Where is Parker?" She'd done her best to keep herself from saying this man's name first but she couldn't seem to help herself. "Where's Jessica?" She added, hoping this would make for a decent cover up.

"I don't know what you're talking about." Sophie snorted, making a show of playing with the zipper on the front of her suit. "Are you going to parade me around like a kindergartner at show and tell or what?"

Wesker smiled again and help the door open for Sophie. "You're not the first woman they've seen wearing one of those suits." He purred. "However... I do believe I, personally, prefer it on you."

Sophie blushed though she was trying hard not to. "Do you keep all your pets in this kind of get up? No wonder you never have a steady relationship."

Wesker had to laugh. "And why would I require one?" He asked, genuinely curious. "A woman should serve her purpose, then remove herself. Why would I wish her to linger beyond that?"

Sophie gave Wesker a dark look, her grey eyes turning stormy. "Wow. You really are a self centered jerk." She snorted. "A woman should never be treated like property to be thrown away or otherwise. Neither should children."

"And yet they are." Wesker snorted. "They get exactly what they deserve. If they deserve more... They must first earn it."

"Women maybe, but children?" Sophie shook her head. "Children should never have to earn anything. They did not ask to be brought into this world. Especially one like this. Should Alex have to earn his right to simply breathe because of a conscious choice you made to sleep with a certain woman?"

Wesker smiled thinly, thinking about Rebecca. "If he is not deserving of the powerful genes I gave him, then he deserves nothing more than that gutter rat Violet."

"Don't tell me he was your plan." Sophie scoffed, crossing her arms under her breasts. She hated this suit but it was better than some of the things she'd been forced to wear in the past. That high necked librarian dress for starters. "If that were true, you'd never have let him go for so long. You'd probably have drowned him at birth."

Wesker was quite aware of the physical attraction he had towards Sophie, but beyond that... He loved the way she spoke to him. "No, Alex was merely a happy accident." He confessed. "One that will help me get it perfect it next time."

"The way you're going, Mr. Wesker, there will be no next time." Sophie muttered, turning away from him to inspect the large room he'd brought her to.

"I don't know... Why do you think I kept you alive?" Wesker asked, though didn't linger close for an answer. He was already flicking switches, pods and workstations illuminating all over the large room.

Sophie looked around her, not seeming at all afraid. It would be a strange thought, but she seemed rather at home in what proved to be a lab. "I think you are curious about me. That's about all I really have going for me." She whispered after a long moment.

"And you don't think large breasts catch my attention, just like every other male?" Wesker teased, in a rare moment of frivolity.

Sophie offered him a tiny grin over her shoulder. "I think that one goes without saying." She said softly, now crouching before a cage that held an undead dog. "These things are so sad...This is cruel, you know that?"

"How is it cruel?" Wesker asked, leaning against a workbench as he watched Sophie. "In this state they feel no pain, are much harder to kill."

"They may not feel pain in that sense but they know it. The brain is not as dead as Umbrella would have liked for us to believe." Sophie breathed. "They were more aware than what they told us. Those people...knew their families when they tore them apart. Hunger...it is our basic function. When our brain is forced to live off this alone...even the memory of a relationship is not enough."

"What do you know of Umbeella?" Wesker asked, his eyes narrowing slightly. "That word... It should be no more than a memory. After all... The ignorant masses do not believe in 'zombies', therefore they do not exist. No matter how many cities get blown up."

"I read books and articles." Sophie was quick to play for a cover up. "I am not an ignorant mass, Mr. Wesker. I worked in a library, remember?"

Wesker snorted at the very thought and shook his head. "You are as much a librarian, as Indiana Jones claims to be an archeologist." He remarked. "It almost seems... Like you took that of in order to spy on the school..."

"Poppy cock!" Sophie shouted, all but surging to her feet to glare at Wesker. "I went to that school thinking I could get away from people like you! I was just as surprised at the next person when you stepped out of Ms. Medgismith's room wearing nothing but a smile!"

"Nothing?" Wesker asked, his brow arching in amusement. "Is that a fantasy of yours?"

"Hardly." Sophie rolled her eyes, making sure to turn away from Wesker before he could read anything else in her eyes. She was lucky that was the only question he'd asked. She'd nearly made matters that much worse for herself. "It was not something I wanted to see, believe me."

"I find it hard to believe a bartender." Wesmer replied, proving he held little value for people in such a profession. "Or even one pretending to be a librarian. You were not there for the job prospects, that much I can tell."

"I was there because I like libraries and books." Sophie said pointedly. "The fact that I fudged my resume a bit is neither here nor there. I've spent my life fudging things in order to get what I want. I don't see any reason to stop that now."

"Of all the children in that school, why take an interest in Alex and and his pet?" Wesker asked curiously. "There were far more needy children."

"Because Violet reminded me of myself at her age." Sophie whispered, turning her back on Wesker completely. "I don't want to talk anymore. Just do whatever you're going to do and put me back in my own cage."

"That didn't answer my question Wesker observed. "And besides... I doubt you were a genuine monster."

"I never said I was. I just said she reminded me of..." Sophie suddenly stopped speaking, knowing now that Wesker was twisting the question so that she would correct him. When she did that, there would be even more explaining to do. "I'm tired, you know." She whispered.

"Reminded you... Of...?" Wesker was behind Sophie now, his breath against her ear as a hands lid against her slender waist.
