"It can't keep going on like this!" A young woman's voice gasped as two figures dove over a snow drift to avoid detection by passing guards. "We have been fighting for so long that no one even cares anymore!" She added, running her fingers through blue black hair that had already become brittle with the cold.
"Of course they remember, Dex." The young woman's companion replied in an annoyed whisper. "We fight for freedom from the imperial invaders who seek to make us bow down to them!"
The woman who had just been referred to as Dex rolled her grey eyes. "What does it matter who sits on the throne as high emperor? Either way, we're still left down here in the dirt." She added, poking her head up to see if the coast was clear. "The rebellion is just pushing back the tide, sooner or later the imperials will find us all, and execute us as promised."

"He loves you." Bree whispered, doing her best to keep the wound from bleeding out. "Otherwise he wouldn't have roasted the man trying to..." She paused, her mouth hanging open when she saw that the man called Brynjolf was gone.

"You didn't say he wasn't." Almeada shot back, preparing to close the curtain. "Be gone and tell your Dunmer she has to move in with you. Her things will be sitting outside the gate."

Dex wasn't all that surprised Brynjolf was gone, it was merely an inconvenience that she would now have to hunt him down herself. "He told me I was a coward." The young woman whispered. "How could I be with such a brave and powerful man... If he thought that of me?"

"You would let the last dragon simply die?!" Ulfric didn't know if Draco was the last of his kind, it was merely a last ditch effort to try and get the elder woman's help.

"The man was afraid. Men are often afraid of a woman who can stand beside them instead of behind. My own mother said I would never get a man unless I let him rule." Bree said. Once the words left her mouth she knew that her mother had been right all along. Once again.

"I've already told you he will not die." Almeada hissed, her tone sounding strange. "And besides, you, being a king should be asking questions of that dragon that he alone can answer. Good day to you!" That said the window seemed to go black as if it were a window into Oblivion. And then it began to rain Bree's personal effects.

"You have the love of a king, does that not make you happy?" Dex asked, taking one of her gloved off and using the soft leather to try and wipe at least some of the mud and blood from Draco's face.

Ulfric said nothing more. He began gathering up Bree's belongings, not wishing anyone but him to see her more 'delicate' items.

"All I truly want is the love of a man, not his station." Bree admitted, her fingers still glowing. "I'm afraid of being lost in that...does that make any sense?"

Dex nodded her head slowly. "Bryjolf tried to force me to marry him, to be his queen." She confessed to the Dunmer woman quietly. "He confused my lust for love... And now I pay the price for it." She lifted her silver gaze to meet Breenan's, not saying anything for a long moment. "You have his love, even I can see that." She added at last. "I know I have been cold with you, despite your kindness, but... The last person I thought was my friend, well she was a tool used to try and bring Ulfric down."

Bree frowned slightly at this and then sighed softly. "I'm so sorry, Dex. I know better than most how hard it is to make a friend...a true one. But, you can trust me. I want nothing but the best for you and your dragon."

"Thank you, I do believe you, but it's no use. I love Draco... But I cannot ask him to accept me now, not if I truly am with child." Dex replied. "I want him to live. He needs a life far from the pain and misery I cause him."

"How do you know what you said to Brynjolf...that was his name right? How do you know what you said to him wasn't true? How do you know it isn't the dragon's child?" Bree asked, gesturing for Dex to look at the shower of clothes that was happening on the other side of the gate.

"Draco told me something... That when we were together in one of my past lives, we did conceive a child together. That union was met with fear and resentment from others; both I and the child were killed. So either way... I have no hope." Dex replied, her gaze now also fixed on the sudden appearance of clothes. "What use is there for so many garments?"

"Usually nothing..." Bree frowned, pushing herself to her feet. "Holy Talos, those are my under garments!" She cried.

Dex wouldn't leave Draco's side, not even to assist her new friend. As luck would have it, Ulfric soon came stumbling through the gates, carrying more of Breenan's clothing, a comical sight to say the least.

Breenan could do little more than place a hand to her forehead. "Ulfric..." She was at his side in an instant, trying to pull the risque cloth away from his face. "What happened?"

"Almeada, that's what!" Ulfric replied gruffly. "That damnm witch wouldn't let me in the house, and refused to come and help Draco. Then she told me you had to move into the palace if you wanted to keep your possessions!"

Breenan's forehead creased at this, her vision suddenly blurred. "Damn it all." She muttered. "Ulfric just drop that junk and help Draco. I can only do so much...I'm going to talk to Almeada myself. You get those two to the palace and whatever you do...place that girl under guard. She's just as bad lucked as I am."

"The last time she was under guard, my supposedly best friend refused to leave her alone." Ulfric grumbled. "Besides, by the looks of it, I doubt she'll leave the dragons side anyway."

Bree nodded slowly, a soft sigh escaping her. "Very well. I will see you as soon as I can." She paused by Dex. "Will you please trust each other? For the dragon's sake?"

Dex was still mistrustful of Ulfric, for obvious reason. But then again, she still didn't know that he had been the one keeping Draco safe this past month. Silently she nodded, then returned her gaze to Draco.
"Do not worry, lovely, she will remain safe. As, I hope, will you." Ulfric breathed, tilting Bree's chin up to touch his lips lightly to her own.

"Have I ever let you down?" Bree whispered, not yet knowing that the night to come would bring her nothing but pain. "If I'm not back by morning, come find me."

"If you are not back in an hour, I am coming to find you." Ulfric swore, also not knowing that his two new charges would bring their misfortune upon his palace that very night.

"Check the inn first." Bree teased, pressing another kiss to his lips before she turned to run in the opposite direction...

"Stop pacing..." It was near dawn when Draco finally opened his eyes, a groan escaping him. "You're giving me a headache." He told the jarl who didn't seem to be able to stop moving.

Dex had fallen asleep in a chair beside the bed, her head resting on the mattress next to Draco where she had slumped forward. She would later berate hersel repeatedly for having fallen asleep at all.
"It's morning." Ulfric told Draco, apparently not surprised the dragon had pulled through, just like Almeada had claimed he would. "She should be back by now..."

Draco groaned again and forced himself to sit up. "I smell Dunmer blood." He whispered, moments before the shouts from the guards began.
When Ulfric turned to leave, the dragon rested a hand on Dex's head. He had no way of telling her how sorry he was.

Ulfric said nothing to Draco as he swept from the room. The mention of Dunmer blood, and now the sound of shouts made him instantly aware of the reason Breenan had yet to return. "That damn girl... I should never have let her go!"
Dex stirred slightly when Draco's hand touched her head, but otherwise she remained in a restless slumber.

"No. You shouldn't have." Galmar met the king at the foot of the throne, his dagger already deep in Breenan's mid-section. "I told her never to come outside or I would kill her. I think I kept my word." He chuckled, not seeing the raging fire that still blazed in Bree's eyes.

"Forgive me." Draco whispered, resting his forehead against her own. "You should never have been out there. I should have taken better care of you. But...I always fail you."

Ulfric was seething, but he knew that losing his cool as Glamar obviously wished him to, well that was the very thing would also cause Breenan to lose her life. "Why her?" He asked as he approached. "What did she truly do that offends you so?"

"It is I who should seek forgiveness." Dex whispered as her eyes opened. When she had left Draco near that waterfall, her eyes had been merely grey. Now they were much more like his own, beautiful and otherworldly in their silver hue. Perhaps a sign that her fate was no longer as certain as it had once been.

"She's a Dunmer for one thing." Galmar chuckled, the sound deep and cruel. "For another, you love her. That is reason enough to punish her to me. And I have spent the better part of the day doing just that. I thought I would be kind and give her back to you before she is turned away from Sovenguard like the dog she is."

"Your eyes...I remember them now." Draco breathed, wishing to change the subject. "They look as they once did but...I'm afraid it is only because you are still asleep."

"And you think your whore, poppy, entered Sovengard?" Ulfric sneered. "Only the just and the brave enter, there is no place for whores and spies."

Dex didn't even want to blink, afraid she truly was still asleep, and merely dreaming of this quiet moment with the one she loved. "Once did... When I was a dragon too?" She ventured.

Galmar grabbed the hilt of the dagger and shoved it further into Bree's stomach. She whimpered, though she tried hard not to. "What was that?" Galmar asked loudly, baring his teeth. "You'll miss your Dunmer whore?"

"Yes." Draco breathed, now speaking in their native tongue. "Come and lay down with me. It's been so long since I simply held you."

"My only regret is that my Queen shall be slain by a coward, and not a proud warrior." Ulfric replied, resisting the urge to leap forward with everything he had. Saving Bree would require a level head.

As she pulled herself up onto the bed and curled against Draco as she had a thousand times before in each of her lives, Dex felt tears begin to well in her eyes all over again. "I miss you so much!" She blurted, burying her face against her mates chest.
