So slow to catch on

Jill gave Leon a little push, then smiled. "Believe me, these things can last days." She assured him. "Besides, I want the chance to grill you myself."
"You doubt my suitability as a mother?" Claire asked thinly, folding her arms across her chest.

"You can come get some fresh air with me." Jill replied softly. "They aren't telling us anything, and that won't change in the next five minutes." She added as she got to her feet, then pulled Chris up to his. "Remember how you used to go up onto the roof of the RPD... Just so you could have your smoke in peace?"

Chris closed his eyes at the memory, the cool breeze from it nearly sending him back in time. "That was my heaven. Even after everything we'd been through...It's too bad even that got taken away."

Jill smiled a little, her intention purely being to help Chris forget the misplaced guilt he was feeling. "Well maybe now you have that little piece of heaven back." She replied, holding out a pack of cigarettes she had bought while hunting down the coffee. Of course, it wasn't something she usually promoted.

Chris opened his eyes and gave Jill a truly relieved smile. "For about two minutes." He laughed softly. "Until I remember that I let Wesker win. Again."

"That's why you have the whole pack." Jill teased gently, her slender fingers pulling Chris' golden lighter from her back pocket as she pushed it into his fingers. "Of course... Two minutes was all we ever had time for back then." She added, brushing her lips lightly to his own.

Chris smiled, though there was nothing joyful behind it. "My head hurts." He confessed as he slid his fingers through Jill's. "All I can think about is just what I can do to make all this right."

"Right now there isn't a lot we can do." She replied gently, squeezing his fingers in reassurance. "Take care of yourself, and I'll do what I can to find some information on Leon. Then we can get to finding the babies, okay?"

"Jill...I'm worried about Claire." Chris confessed. "After Steve...if she loses these kids...and Leon too...I'll be lucky if she kills herself."

"That's why she needs us to be strong." Jill replied gently, a strained smile pulling at her lips. "I don't want to search for them alone, but I completely understand if you want to stay here with Claire."

Chris shook his head, wishing his brain would give him a straight thought. All he could think was that Claire was going to shut down completely and all would be lost. "You know the bullet didn't go all the way through." He said finally, just for something to say.

Jill nodded her head solemnly, having been trying not to think about this. "I didn't mention it to Claire when I found them." She whispered. "I should have fought harder... I shouldn't have let wesker beat me, then Claire wouldn't be in this mess."

"I could say the same thing, you know. But what good does it do? We still might not have found the babies...Hell, maybe we should look at it as this is the way we kept Leon here." He said darkly, lighting a cigarette the moment they were on the roof. "It's too cold out here."

Jill responded to this by wrapping her arms around Chris, her body still running warmer than normal thanks to Uroboros. she was oddly silent for quite some moments, her head simply resting against Chris' shoulder. "What kind of person does it make me... If wesker was right, and I was pregnant? How could I not remember?"

"What if you didn't know?" Chris asked her. "You know how Wesker is. He always assumes everyone knows everything about their bodies. But what if you didn't?"

Jill truly wished she could find comfort in those words. "What if she's still alive?" She asked, not aware she had even referred to the child they had never known by any gender at all. "You saw what Rebecca was capable of doing to sherry... Imagine wesker, with a child that carried the blood of the two people he hates most in the world..."

Chris closed his eyes at the very thought. "She wouldn't still be alive." He whispered. "I don't know...I don't know anything anymore..." He dropped the cigarette and wrapped his arms around Jill. "All I know is that I love you. And as long as I have you, everything else is worth fighting for."

Jill's head was still turned to the side slightly, her eyes watching the embers of the cigarette until they faded to dull ash. "I'll never know why you do, will I?" She breathed, turning her face at last the bury it against her partners shoulder.

"If I had to start giving you all the reasons, we'd freeze to death out here." Chris laughed.
A week brought them no closer to answers than it did their former friend Rebecca. All they got was an agent at the doors to the ICU, refusing to let them past or giving them any information on their friend.
Saturday night had Chris sitting in the chair next to Claire's bed, snoring loudly. It had been another tough day of simply trying to get his sister to speak to him.

Jill rarely slept more than a few hours each day. She still had nightmares, Wesker's experiments of her creeping back into her memory when she wasn't conscious to stop them. Of course, she didn't burden Chris with this fact. As it was Jill was still trying to gain information on Leon, anything that would give Claire the hope she needed to simpy hold on. The once firey young Redfield was pretty much catatonic, unable to cope with the loss of her newborn children, and the man she had refused to marry, but still loved dearly.

Chris jerked awake when he heard a crash in the hall. There was someone shouting and for a moment he thought his sister had finally woken up. But his eyes rested on her face and he saw that she was still as lifeless as ever.

Jill was again trying to covertly sneak her way into Leon's room. It wasn't the first time she had tried, nor the first time she would inevitably get caught. As always, she wasn't the kind of person who could just sit by and 'wait and see'. Of course, it didn't help matters when she beat up the guard posted at the door, meaning that back up was called.

This time there were three men who were holding her to the floor. "How many times do you have to be told?!" The one in the middle shouted in her ear. "You either get it through your head or you and that meathead you're with will not be allowed back in here! Are we clear?!"

Jill continued to struggle, even when she was pinned to the floor. "I don't know who your talking about." She spat back, resenting this man thinking her Chris a 'meathead'.

"Then you won't mind if we kick out every meat head we come across then will you?" The middle man snarled.

"Be my guest, I won't miss you." Jill responded, spitting in his face at a lack of anything else she could do.

The man moved to slap Jill but was held up by a set of fingers so white they were almost see through. "What the hell is this?" Leon Kennedy stood behind the middle man, looking extremely worse for wear.

Jill's sky coloured eyes were filled with obvious surprise as they looked up at Leon, and she broken into a sudden grin. "I knew you were okay!" She exclaimed, unable to even begin to hide just how happy she was to see Leon alive.

Leon let go of the other man and staggered away from them as if nothing had ever happened. It was as if he didn't know who Jill was. Or maybe...he was acting...

Jill scrambled free of the men who had been holding her to follow after Leon. "Leon?" She asked uncertainly, a slender hand resting lightly on his shoulder.

"That's my name." Leon whispered. He'd stopped but he hadn't turned to look at Jill. "What do you want?"
