Night and Day

"Funny, seems to me like games are what you excel at." Ebony replied thinly. She too was aching, but Frost's magic was already corrupting her feelings. Love had been twisted into nothing more than animal desire.

"You wouldn't be a danger if you drank a little each day." Glenda replied. "Take care of yourself, and there is no danger."

Those words broke Ebony all over again, though she wouldn't be given time to dwell on them.
"So that's how it is, huh? Why you rarely even have to come to class? You're banging the teacher?" One of the night class girls had come back for something she had forgotten, just in time to see Julian kiss Ebony.

"I. Love. You." Tobias punctuated each word with a gentle kiss before smiling at Katie. "Transfer to the night class, I promise it will be the best thing you ever did." He breathed, a rough thumb brushing Katie's cheek lightly.

"Well hello, Carolyn. I was worried you were going to be late." Julian said, giving Ebony a look. "Come on. Let's go work on your papers before I head out to hunt. And don't piss me off, dear heart."

"That won't happen." Malik said firmly. He had come into the hall just in time to see the last display. "The hunters will believe we are trying to have monopoly on her aND start something. She will not move, boy."

Carolyn beamed brightly, like she had just gotten something important. "No problem at all, sir." She purred as she skipped along after Julian.
This only filled Ebony with that much more jealousy.

"You think it wise to leave her with all those tasty day students?" Tobias snorted.

Julian got a brief feeling that he was being set up for something before he dismissed it. He patted the girl on the shoulder as he led her out into the hall. He didn't for a moment think that Ebony so much as cared what he did. 

"I think her problem is you." Malik said simply. "You are an upstart, boy. You always have been. I have told you how it will be. The girl is staying with the humans. Live with that."
"Toby..." Katie touched his arm. "It's okay. I don't belong with the night kids anyway."

Ebony gathered up her belongings after Julian left, though she was wishing he hadn't kissed her. Every kiss just ended up becoming that much more painful.

Tobias would have argued this further, if not for Katie's fingers on his arm. "Funny how things around here were just fine until you showed your face." He snarled at the ancient vampire.

Julian was completely unaware of what he was doing to Ebony. However, he did find himself wishing he hadn't kissed her either. The cost had been too high. It left his insides aching. She hated him. She'd said so not long ago in fact. 


Malik smiled. "I was here before you. And trust me when I say that they were not fine. Kicking dust under a rug does not make it go away. No matter how much you'd like it to." The master vampire said calmly. "You are still being blamed for the death of a hunter. Your taking control of the half breed would be seen as an open declaration of war. As I've said before."

"Why her?" Carolyn asked curiously when Julian had been silent for some time. "I'm guessing you don't make a habit of kissing students?"

"Taking control?" Tobias asked thinly. "You make it sound like she is cattle!" He growled.

"What house do you serve?" Julian asked, not wanting to answer the question. "Since Tobias left there are many of you who are pledging fealty to the master vampire."

"I believe it was you who told me that humans are what they eat." Malik chuckled.

"I serve no one." Carolyn replied with a shrug. "My father always told me never to accept that anyone was better than me."

"She isn't human!" Tobias insisted. "She is beyon human. beyond vampire! That is why you are fighting so hard to keep her exactly where you want her!"

Julian laughed at that. "Sorry, honey. As long as the master vampire is alive you will never be better than anything." He snorted, turning away from her. 

"You are still learning." Malik said as if it were that simple. 
Katie sighed softly. "Toby, it's okay. Just leave this alone. Okay?"

"Do you tell her that?" Carolyn asked curiously. "Or are you going to tell me she's some kind of special now?"

Tobias didn't want to, but the sound of Katie's pleading had him convinced. "Come on, i'll walk you home." He told her, though didn't take his gaze off Malik.

"Don't you worry, fledgling. What I do is my business." Julian snapped. He had a strong feeling that he wasn't dealing with the young vampire girl. But that didn't mean he had to let her get the best of him. "I'm not sorry for it either."

Katie walked beside Tobias pausing when she saw the amount of cars the were in the school lot. "The hunters are here." She said softly. "They know..."

"No, you're just sorry I interrupted." Carolyn replied with a haughty sniff, though she was still reading the book in front of her.

Tobias was quick to pull Katie behind him as he scanned the cars. "We could just leave... you know." He breathed as he turned to face her. "Disappear and not tell anyone."

"Dann right I did, Frost." Julian said, yanking her hair as he walked past. "You are shameless. You realize that?" 

"I can't do that to Gran." Katie said, shaking her head. "I'll be okay." There were angry shouts coming from the building where all the cars were parked. Even Malik showed up.

"What? I thought little girls in a school uniform got you hot." The blonde purred, slamming the book shut to hop up on the desk and watch Julian. He was right, this witch was desperate that shame really didn't come into it. Or so it seemed.

"You all need to calm down!" Marie was trying to quieten the angry shouts coming from the guild members. "Nothing has happened! Katherine is exactly where she was before all this trouble started!"

"Cooking makes me hot. Running too long makes me hot. You look like a slut in a bad porn. It's not doing anything for me." Julian said as he dug a cigarette from his back pocket.

"Katherine has fed on a vampire! Our inside sources have told us!" One of the male hunters roared. "There was an agreement made. Glenda assured us that she would not feed! How do we know this vampire did not feed on her?"

Frost laughed and flopped back on the table, once again looking exactly like Ebony. "Don't tell me it's the thought of what dearest mommy would do to you if she found out you had violated her dirty little secret!"

"You know because I have told you so!" Marie replied firmly. "Because Katherine was dying and it was the blood of said vampire that saved her life!"

Julian lit his cigarette and blew the smoke in "Ebony's" face. "Sorry. I am so over that. She bores me and so do you." He said coolly. "Why are you here? You know Glenda is going to sense you and have a fit."

"Why was she dying?" Another hunter demanded.  "What's going on at this school?!"
"And the expenditure of magic that was felt earlier today!" Another roared. "Again this school is getting out of hand!"

"Glenda's busy." Frost replied in a rather sing song voice, though she continued to look like Ebony. "She spent so much time believing your little witch was the dirty family secret... She missed how much trouble their perfect princess was causing."

"She was dying because you people have her believing that taking blood is something dirty! She was starving to death!" Marie hissed at the first hunter.

Julian glanced out the window toward the office and saw the cars. He sighed heavily, knowing he needed to be over there. "I have to go Frost. With any luck this will ruin your dance."

"And the magic?" The first man demanded. "What's your explanation for that?"

"It makes no difference." Frost replied with a dark smile. "I shall still get what I want." All this to gain the heart of a witch who had no confidence in her own power. The only one who could break her hold on Julian.

"Witches are no business of the hunters guild." Marie replied rather evasively. "There are so few of them they are hardly worth the bother." she added, trying not to think how alone she felt facing off against these angry men.

"You will never have anything but your magic to play with." Julian snorted. "Go home, Frost. You're a danger to everyone here. Including the desk."

"I believe we were given permission to train witches." Malik said as he entered, instantly commanding the room. "And as for the coveted half breed...you folk were not doing your job. She was attacked by an unregistered werewolf." 
He words silenced the angry room and for a moment they stood simply staring at one another.

Frost didn't seem to take offense to this, and smiled at Julian. "Go pretend to be her hero." She purred before disappearing altogether.

Marie couldn't explain just how relieved she was that Malik had arrived. She felt the hunters guild still looked down their noses at women, no matter who her mother may be. "Which we took care of while you sat on your thumbs!" She added.

"I believe it is time we take control of the girl." The male said. "You lot have proved nothing to us. If Saunders were to show up now, what defense would you have?"
"You think they called a master vampire here for nothing?" Malik asked, his tone icy cold.

"And we have a registered werewolf!" Marie added. "I hardly think Jack will be a problem, given the different defenses we do have. All that aside... Do you forget his daughter resides here also? You know, the creature you abused when she failed to kill him?"

"You are lucky you too were not abused when we discovered that you had hidden the fact that you lived! We are still within our rights to do so!" The male roared. 
"Do it and you will start a war you will not recover from!" Julian roared, bursting into the room like a summer hurricane.

Marie was surprised to see her partner arrive, and at the same time wondered how he knew what was going on. "This should not even be a question! All focus should be on tracing Jack Saunders and keeping him from harming anyone else!" She told the guild members icily. "War is exactly what he will be hoping for!"

"That half breed is what we need to keep us from that. Her blood could power an army. If we had that we would be better equipped to deal with him." The male said firmly.

"That half breed is just a girl." Marie replied, clearly losing her temper now. "You make a move on her, and I assume that you are choosing war over the greater good."

"If the greater good is the loss of one to save many then perhaps." The man said, scowling as both vampire and werewolf came to stand beside the former huntress. "My you do seeme to get around, don't you?"
