End of Watch

Judas Carmichael hated rain. He also hated the orc that stood in groups across the street from him. It didn't help that his partner belonged to the same social class as they did. It also didn't help that the orc group hated his partner. 
They were throwing up gang signs behind the other man's back, pretending to shoot at him and it wasn't the first or the last time they would do it. 
"Hey, Ruvik!" He barked, finally tired of standing in one place while the other man decided whether he wanted an orc burger or a bronto thigh. Both smelled like death. "Today, please! Geez, I swear four elves have died in the time it's taking you to decide on that garbage."

Judas had taken several beers to the shower with him and it was obvious as he took another swing.

Ruvik sidestepped him again, then gave him a hard shove that sent Judas face first into the couch. “You’re a mess.” He told his partner with a snort. “Sleep it off, then I’ll be ready to hear you admit what an asshole you’ve been.”

Molly covered him with a blanket when the towel fell open. Judas didn't even react. After a moment he began to snore. 
"Wow. He is really in love with her." Molly said softly. "Are you sure I shouldn't be the one to go?" She asked Ruvik.

Ruvik sighed quietly and again ran his fingers over his head. He hated to admit that Judas had at least been partially right; it had to be Molly. “That’s what all that craziness was, him loving her?” He asked, offering his own lover a tired smile.

"You look like you're going to pass out. We'll talk about this in the morning." Gently she took his hand off his head and lead him to the bedroom. 

Kandomere smiled as he turned away from the monitor and looked at Celia. "I told you he had that human with him." He purred. "I find myself wondering if he is my dear lost friend Jerak."

Celia was staring at the monitor with a frown. “You think he’s going to let her come here?” She asked curiously. “And forgive my bluntness, but shouldn’t we worry about whoever this orc female is that’s feeding the human girl information and prophecies?”

"I'll take care of her." Kandomere hissed, knowing exactly where this woman was. "You stay here and keep that little girl from reaching anything at all. Break her." He instructed.

Celia was surprised to hear Kandomere say this. “You would have me break your most prized possession?” She asked, trying not to seem too happy that he didn’t want the younger elf like Celia had always been told.

Kandomere nodded, his face grim. "I have no need for her when I have a perfectly good bright such as you." He told her simply. "Now go. Break them both and we will find the last wand together."

It would turn out to be unfortunate for Viola that Kandometebhad chosen such unfeeling words when answering Celia; the elder elf would take her anger out on the younger girl, daughter or no. “As you wish.” She replied with a bow of her head. “Your precious little flower will be no more than a useless weed by the time I am through.”

Kandomere found Ruvik in the outer hall waiting on Judas. He was not surprised to find that these men we're no more welcoming to the orc than the regular police force had been. Elite meant nothing when it came to cruelty and humans.
"Not allowed in the dressing room?" He asked, pausing to listen to the harsh words about orcs being spoken even by his own partner. " Not much of a friend is he?"

“Don’t gotta be friends to be partners.” Ruvik replied bluntly without looking at Kandomere. “The boy needs his human comforts. He’s soft, likes elves too much for his own good.” He added, finally turning his gaze on the blue haired man beside him.

"That could be a problem for both of you." Kandomere said, his tone even and cool. "Humans have always been the true enemy here. There's no denying that. But what I don't understand is why you would swear an oath to protect them. They don't deserve it after betraying your kind."

Ruvik seemed to think about this for a moment, then frowned at Kandomere. “You think people should pay for the crimes of their ancestors?” He asked finally. “These people did nothing to me. All they are guilty of is having tiny minds unable to see the good in others.”

"Isn't that bad enough? Don't they judge us based on our heritage? It's foolish to think that you will ever belong." Kandomere said darkly. "I knew an orc once who did the same as you. In the end the people punished him for their crimes. I never knew what becabe of him."

“Keep thinking nothing will change, and nothing ever will.” Ruvik replied with a shrug. “I do the best job I can. I want to keep everyone safe. I’m not asking for recognition, just the chance to keep doing what I do.”

"What a pile of shit. No one believes that and no one will. That is going to get you killed by the people you trust." Kandomere spat. "Trust no one. Not even those you bed. Listen to me, orc, you will live longer this time."

Ruvik watched Kandomere for some moments, silently trying to figure him out. “This time?” He finally asked. “I think you’re losing it, elf.” He snorted, thinking it was simply a strange choice of words.

" If only I were." Kandomere sighed. "Have you been to see the old orc woman yet?" He asked. "Has she tried to wake you up? I'd steer clear of her too if you're enjoying that little toy you are trying so hard to hide from me."

That finally had Ruvik’s attention. He tried to speak several times before he gave up trying to hide it. “Why do you care so much? Should your worry not be the bright that Judas dalliednwith?”

"Your human friend dallied with her?" Kandomere hissed, his mood changing in the blink of an eye. His lips went thin. "You see what I mean? They contaminate our races, even when they know they shouldn't. I think it is time I made the girl a wand." He pushed to his feet, his eyes on fire.

Ruvik was already inwardly berating himself for being so stupid. “Well... maybe I got it wrong.” He offered rather weakly. “I’m just pissedbat him, alright?”

Kandomere paused by the door, his ice colored eyes still burning. He wasn't buying it. 
"Jerak, you never could remember how well I know you. I will make the wand and return myself to power. When I do I will make things right again. You will see. For today...get to your station."

Ruvik scowled at Kandomere, not amused in the least. “Don’t call me that. No one has the right to carry that name.” He told the elf firmly before he simply shoved his way into the locker room, knowing he needed to set things straight with Judas again.

The men in the room looked at Ruvik as if he were poison. Everyone began clearing the room. 
Judas finished lacing his boots and didn't look up. He was still pissed from the night before.

“Be pissed all you want. Tomorrow.” Ruvik told his partner once they were alone. “We have to send Molly in. I don’t like it. I don’t want to, but your elf isn’t going to be safe for long. Kandomere is going to kill her. Tonight. He’s making her into a new wand.”

"I already did it." Judas didn't look up at the orc he'd come to know of as a friend. He couldn't make himself. He already felt like an ass. It was the reason he was saying the nasty things about him now. He was sure it would ease his conscience.  It had done nothing of the sort. "I dropped Molly off three hours ago. You were still sleeping. You never even noticed..."

Ruvik was dangerously silent for some moments. He had tried to be the nice guy, to take whatever bile Judas tossed at him, but this was too far. He slammed a fist into the locker directly beside Judas’ head with enough force to leave a massive dent. “If anything has happened to her before I get there, you’re the one I’m coming for. Human.” He spat. “To think, I came in here wanting to help you!”

"Help me what?" Judas snapped, trying not to show any fear at the massive amount of force Ruvik had used. Even for him it was quite a bit. "Why are you so bent out of shape?" He hissed. "She's just a human."

Ruvik remained close enough for Judas to feel his breath on his skin. “So we’re being like that, are we?” He asked thinly. “In that case... your girl is just an elf. No need to stop her death, there are a million more of them.” He added coldly as he finally backed away. “Let Kandomere Male her into a wand, then see how little it matters to you.”
