So slow to catch on

Jill gave Leon a little push, then smiled. "Believe me, these things can last days." She assured him. "Besides, I want the chance to grill you myself."
"You doubt my suitability as a mother?" Claire asked thinly, folding her arms across her chest.

Sometime later when they were still seated at their table, Jill ran her finger around the edge of her water glass until it started to ring, not realising it was something she had always done in the past. "They seem to know us here... Did we come often?"

"I'm a meat eater, Jill." Chris teased, his eyes sliding over her and down to the glass she toyed with. "Of course they know us." He added with a purr. "We don't even have to put in our order, they already know what we get." He winked at her, motioning to a waitress. It was clear that this young woman was madly in love with Chris. She nearly fell over herself to get over to their table.

Of course, this meant that Jill took an instant dislike to the young woman. Even though Chris was still pretty much a stranger in her memory, there was no denying her jealousy. "Uh huh... And was it just the meat you ate here?" She asked before she could help herself.

Chris gave her another wolfish grin, not realizing that she might be jealous. "If you can't remember then I'm not going to tell you." He purred.

Jill was no longer running a slender finger around the rim of her glass, nor was she smiling. She was practically glaring at Chris by the time the young waitress appeared at their table.

The waitress leaned over and whispered something in Chris' ear and he threw back his head and laughed. He had no idea his amnesiac fiancee was turning a strange shade of green.

The glass in Jill's hand suddenly shattered with the force she was gripping it as she watched them. It was an odd sight, to see this slender woman demonstrating such strength with apparently little effort.

Chris looked at Jill but didn't seem surprised to see her break the glass. Apparently it wasn't the first time for her. "Babe, is everything okay?" He asked gently, not knowing that the waitress was glaring daggers at her over his head.

"I wouldn't know, would I?" Jill asked icily. "I wouldn't know if you had screwed every goddamn waitress in this town!" her anger had seemed to flare up from nowhere,

"Not that we haven't tried..." Another waitress pipped up, not helping Chris' case. "But your man is totally devoted to you. It really sucks."

Jill couldn't yet understand why her temper had fared up so suddenly, and over something so tiny. She narrowed her eyes at the other waitress, silently challenging her to say even one more word.

"Babe, it's okay." Chris rested his hand over Jill's as the two women went their separate ways. "Really. I've already told you, I'm not going anywhere. I won't leave your side until we've figured this out and probably not even then."

There was understandable fear and confusion in Jill's sapphire eyes as she looked across at Chris, making no effort to pull her slender hand from under his own much larger one. "What's wrong with me?" She whispered. "I felt like I was ready to stick my steak knife in her throat!"

"You remember that I belong to you and you don't want to share." Chris proclaimed with a wide grin. "Hey. I've got an idea...my friend Ark lives in Florida...let's go visit him. It'll give us some time together to help you remember. Okay? Trust me, you'll love it. It's been a long time since we went to the beach."

Jill relaxed a little, and even managed a smile. "I think I would like the beach... All that warm sun soaking right down into my bones." She replied, her other hand coming to rest down on top of Chris'. "Did we ever go to the beach together?"

Chris shook his head. "I've never allowed us to slow down." He confessed. "I was going to take us on our honeymoon. But why wait? It may never happen if we do."

"I'm sure you weren't the only one who wouldn't slow down. I bet I never even thought about having a normal life, you know... Kids, and the dog, all that jazz." Jill replied, once again hitting a subject that was unknowingly rather painful.

Chris' eyes locked on the floor for a long moment and he sighed deeply. "We can't have kids..." He breathed. "Listen...you stay here, I'm going to get my phone and call Ark real quick. Okay?" He was already getting up, not really waiting for an answer.

It was clear to even Jill that she had said something to upset Chris. As he left she simply stared down at her empty plate. She had no past, and no real hopes for the future, and as it stood... The present was a pretty depressing place.

When Ark didn't answer, Chris simply sat in the car staring ahead at the restaurant. Fate was an ass. He wasn't sure just how much more he could take out of it. To have Jill back and yet having to remind her of what was done to her. It wasn't fair. But his Jill would hate him forever if he didn't tell her the truth. No matter what it was.

When Chris didn't return, Jill began to worry. Something told her it wasn't like him to just disappear like this. However, the jealousy within her was already whispering that he was distracted by one of the waitresses from earlier. Her chair was pushed back, and the slender brunette was storming from the restaurant.

It was unfortunate for Chris that one of the waitresses had followed him outside. She was sitting on the ground next to him, a hand rested over the ones he had in his lap.

Jill's eyes were blazing when she saw Chris sat with the waitress."I should have known!" She snapped as she came to a stop in front of them. "You are just like the rest of them, and I was an idiot for falling for your lies!"

Chris looked over at the waitress as if he hadn't even realized she was there. He truly hadn't but he could already tell there wasn't going to be any explaining this to her.
"Jill, babe...you don't understand." He said quickly, trying to get to his feet. "Please, don't....don't go..."

"Oh, I understand!" Jill spat. "Rather than helping me remember, you would much prefer to be out here with this tramp!" despite her anger, Jill was listening to Chris and not yet fleeing the scene.

"I got upset by what we were talking about." Chris said, holding up his hands as he tried to approach Jill. "I'm frustrated and tired...I didn't even know she was there. Please, Jill. Don't leave me again."

"You keep saying that, as though I walked out on you in the past..." Jill replied, still not backing away. She didn't know it, but this was the same manner Chris had used to approach her when she was under Wesker's control.

"Yeah." Chris confirmed gently, still coming towards her. "I did and said some pretty stupid things. I deserved it then. But now...not now. I would never betray you, Jill Valentine. You're my partner...my lover...my best friend...and one day, my wife."

If the waitress had been hoping for a chance of even a quick fumble with Chris, his heartfelt words to Jill would have dashed that hope. "But I don't remember being any of those things! Even that name... Jill valentine... It doesn't feel like me!" Jill gasped, feeling somewhat overwhelmed by emotions right then. It was almost like she had been waiting a lifetime to hear those very words.

"It will." Chris breathed, now inches away from her. His strong fingers rested on her hips and he pulled her against him, pressing his lips to hers. He'd help her remember, or he'd spend the rest of his life trying.
