Thicker than Water

Alex Chambers stood on the helicopter landing pad his fingers pressed to his forehead to block out the morning sun. He was dancing from one foot to the other, unable to hide his excitement.
"I see them!" He shouted back to his mother, who was standing near the entrance with a medical team. None of them knew what kind of shape their heroes would return to them in but Alex didn't seem to care. Already he was hopping up and down waving at the chopper as it drew closer. He cheered when Chris Redfield waved to him and repeated the action when Jill Valentine did the same. But as the helicopter touched down his smile began to fade. Not everyone he'd hoped to see was stepping out.
"What happened?" Rebecca Chambers soon came to stand beside her son, her lips set in a thin line as she looked from Chris to Jill. "Where is Parker?" She'd done her best to keep herself from saying this man's name first but she couldn't seem to help herself. "Where's Jessica?" She added, hoping this would make for a decent cover up.

"There was nothing required of him." Alex snapped, turning his burning blue gaze on Violet. "He didn't even fill anything out. You must think I'm really stupid. Don't you think I haven't already tried that?" He added with a hiss, turning to toss another book at the poor woman. He missed her by little more than inches.

Violet was on Alex in an instant, slamming him to the ground and sitting on his chest to keep him there. She showed surprising strength for someone so small. "Dint make me do that again." She warned darkly.

"violet..." the librarian was beside the young girl, gently placing a hand on her shoulder. Miss Sophie was probably the only person who had ever been kind to Violet. "It's all right. He's letting out some steam. I'll clean up in a minute."

"But he shouldn't make more work for you, Miss Sopie!" Violet insisted as she got back to her feet. It was no secret that pretty much everyone at the school disliked violet, but she was used to it. Even her 'father' had been far from kind during her tender years.

Sophie smiled at the young girl and patted her head. "Your little friend will try to look up your skirt." She whispered as she moved to return to her place at the center of the room.
"I will not." Alex hissed, scowling deeply. "I don't like girls. Especially ones who think they're better than me."

Violet scowled down at Alex, not sure why anyone would want to look up her skirt. "I don't think, I know it. Why else would I have to keep you safe? Stupid boy..." She muttered.

Alex's fingers came down and tightened hard on Violet's legs. It would have bruised a normal girl. "What do you mean you have to protect me?" He snarled.

Though it should have had her whimpering in pain, Violet didn't seem to feel anything other than mild annoyance. "You would rather Nicole got her groupies to beat you up?" She shot back, trying to swat Alex's hands away from her bare legs. "You think I bust my own lip?" She added with a scowl.

"I can handle a bunch of little girls." Alex hissed, shoving Violet off him. "I think they beat you up because of yourself. You asked for it. Not me."

The black flecks had appeared in Violet's eyes again, Alex's words genuinely wounding her. "I didn't want to be here! You're the reason I have to be, and I hate you!" Having said that she ran from the library, not accustomed to having her feelings hurt.

Sophie was the one who followed Violet. She knew she'd get in trouble for it later but she simply couldn't let the girl keep the hurt she had in her eyes.
"Vi?" She asked softly, having followed her into a very dark hallway in the building across the way.

"What?" Violet asked bluntly from where she was sat on the floor in a dark corner. Violet didn't fear the dark as most children did. Here in the dark... No one knew she was a monster. While the little girl didn't understand what she truly was, she did sometime feel the thing inside trying to exert its will upon her.

"Alex is just scared, sweet heart. He didn't mean what he said." Sophie was nothing but human. The darkness scared her to death. Bravely she found the young girl and sat beside her. "want to talk?"

"Alex is stupid." Violet replied, picking at a thread in her skirt, one she shouldn't have been able to see in the dark. "Why does he get to be scared, and I have to be brave?"

"No one said you did, sweetie." Sophie said, trying to find the girl's hand in the dark. She finally did and squeezed them gently. "We all get scared sometimes. I'll bet even your dad is afraid every once in a while."

Violet snorted rather loudly at this and rolled her eyes. "My dad... Is the thing the dark fears." She replied. "He sent me here to keep his precious Alex safe until he comes to pick him up. Of course... He will probably leave me here."

"So Alex is your brother?" Sophie asked, rather surprised at this. "And sweetheart, your dad isn't so bad he's just...rather..." She gave a soft laugh, not sure how to explain her feelings on Violet Wesker's father. "Abrasive." She finished finally.

Violet smiled slightly and shook her head. "I'm adopted, and I still have my mothers name, Valentine. She died when I was still a baby." She added. "Alex had always been dad's golden boy, even before I came along. He once called me Alex's... Bodyguard, and told me my life was only needed until they day I had to give it to save Alex."

Sophie had a good mind to call Violet's father and give him what for. Unlike Ms. Medgismith she had no idea of what the school's true intentions were. She had simply been hired to work there like everyone else. "Well, you are your own person and there is no sense in his callus behavior. You don't have to do anything you don't want to. And that is especially true while you are here and not under his thumb. Come on. I'll get you some ice for that lip and we'll make short work off the mess Alex made. How does that sound?"

Violet shook her head. "He would get so mad if he found out... He says I'm not allowed to dull any pain I feel. It makes me weak." She added, proving that Wesker truly had treated her as a project, and not a child.

"Oh poppycock." Sophie snorted, now pulling Violet to her feet. "I will deal with your father if he has a problem with it. I may be afraid of spiders, but I'm not afraid of him!" She finished with a laugh, pulling the girl forward with her.

Violet didn't seem to be putting up much resistance as Sophie pulled her along. The little girl wasn't accustomed to such kindness, and wasn't really sure how to react. "Please..." She breathed as they moved. "I don't want him to hurt you, Miss Sophie..."

Sophie gave a soft laugh as she pushed open the door to the outside. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. "It's going to rain." She whispered. "Its my favorite...best weather for books. Don't you think?"

Violet nodded her head slightly. "I like the rain. I like the sound it makes against the windows." She added.

Sophie nodded at this, taking the little girl back with her to the library. "Why did you let those girls hurt you?" She asked once she'd gotten a bag of ice and placed it on Violet's lip. "You could have just walked away like Alex did."

Sophie shook her head, the waves of her dark hair bobbing about as she did so. "It doesn't matter what they do to me, but it would cost me a lot if I let them hurt Alex."

"If the bas...your father is just planning to leave you here then what does it matter?" Sophie asked. This was not the first time that she felt she was missing something really big.

Violet shrugged her shoulders, again taking a great interest in a piece of fluff on her skirt. "I have my mission. Don't you have yours?" She asked, looking up at Sophie with eyes that seemed too blue to be human.

"What? You mean tending to the library? I hardly call that a mission." Sophie smiled at the little girl. "Is your dad a soldier? Is that where you picked up that term?"

"Let's just say yes." Violet replied, again speaking in a way no girl of her age ever did. "My dad isn't just a soldier, he's better than that. That's why I have to be better than the best." She added.
