"I wanted you when you were still finding your feet in the world, is that not in itself enough?" Wesker replied, surprised to find he was gently stroking his fingers through Rebecca's hair.

"How can it be in pain? It's just an animal." Wesker replied, genuinely seeming to struggle with the concept.

Rebecca grabbed for Wesker's gun before he could stop her and shot the bony animal in the head. As soon as she'd done it she let the large weapon drop to the floor. "Aren't we all just animals, Captain?" She whispered.

"Would you shoot one of your own with such astounding ease?" Wesker asked as he carefully picked his gun up. "If you are all but animals, why shouldn't I put the lot of you out of your misery?"

"You still put yourself above them?" Rebecca asked, wiping at her eyes. "And no. I couldn't put one of my own kind down that easily. I'd at least have given them the chance to say their goodbyes."

"And you think that creature didn't?" Wesker asked, drawing Rebecca's attention to the much smaller, though equally dead looking puppies that wandered around various parts of the lab they were in.

Rebecca had never felt her stomach drop so quickly. She'd thought she'd been doing something kind...only to find out she was as much as monster as the man she loved. Ashamed of herself Rebecca pulled her legs up to her chest and stared at her knees, no longer able to even meet Wesker's gaze.

"Don't feel ashamed of what you did." Wesker told her. "You made a judgement call, something not many would do. They would weigh up the pros and the cons, wasting valuable time, a reason humanity is faltering as it is." He gently pulled her Kees back down from her chest. "With no mother, those pups with have to grow up quickly, and ultimately they will be the stronger for it."

Rebecca didn't answer. All she really wanted to do was throw up. She'd acted irrationally and it had done nothing but hurt the innocent. "That's no help." She whispered. "Having no mother will make them monsters. I should kill them too."

"You're dear friend Claire Redfield grew up with no mother, does that make her a monster?" Wesker asked coolly.

"I was talking about the dogs." Rebecca snapped before she could help herself. "Albert, just stop it. Why do you want to make me suffer? It's not as amusing as you seem to think."

"You were the one who deemed motherless offspring mere monsters." Wesker replied icily. "I was merely demonstrating that anyone can become a killer, if they choose so."

"I know." Rebecca said finally, brushing her hair back from her eyes. "Albert...I'm sorry I killed the dog. I...I always think I'm helping everyone and I always end up screwing it up. I think you've seen that for yourself."

"You're only flaw is the good in you." Wesker told his young protege quietly. "It is a trait that has been used to exploit you... Until now."

Rebecca nodded. "Are you...will you promise to keep others from hurting me?" She asked, the wounded look evident in her eyes.

For a moment, wesker genuinely seemed to think about this, then finally shook his head. "No, but I do promise to makenyou strong enough to keep them from doing it yourself." He swore.

Rebecca could do little to hide the disappointment in her eyes. Silently she pushed off the table and began picking up the undead puppies by the scruff of their necks. She dumped them one by one in a tall box, frowning at them as if her frustration was all their fault. "I'm human, Albert. If you won't protect me, the least you can do is get me something to eat." She muttered.

"Why does this bother you so much?" Wesker asked, genuinely unable to understand. "Why would you choose to trust someone with something as previous as your life?" He asked as he followed her across the room. "You would rather remain weak?"

"Maybe it's just nice to know someone cares about your life too." Rebecca snapped, opening a cabinet to inspect what was inside. "Not that it matters," She went on, slamming the doors when she found it empty. "But I would protect you." She finished, now heading toward another set of cabinets in hopes of finding something there.

It was certainly a foreign concept to Wesker. "Why would you do that?" He asked, again following one step behind Rebecca. "It would only place you in unneeded danger.

"Because I love you, you overgrown idiot!" Rebecca shouted at him, again slamming the doors when she again found nothing. "Why isn't there even a box of crackers in here?!"

Wesker grabbed hold of Rebecca's slender wrist and whirled her around to face him. "Do not say that out loud, you silly girl!" He hissed, though there wasn't an ounce of anger anywhere on his face as he removed his glasses to look at her. "Rebecca, even you must realise what lengths anyone in this world would go to to hurt me, even if that means crushing the only thing I cherish..."

Rebecca's chin quivered, her own eyes searching those that she barely recognized anymore. Before anything more could be said, Rebecca pressed her lips to Wesker's. It was in this kiss that she showed him excatly how she felt, speaking to his heart instead of aloud.

Wesker didn't kiss Rebecca like he had last time. This time he was gentle, almost like his old human self. His fingers moved slowly as he savoured the taste of his young lover, but soon found their way into her silken hair. He rumblednin appreciation, glad she had grown it long.

Rebecca gave a soft little moan against his lips, his kiss pure pleasure. It was everything she'd ever wanted from him. It was all she'd truly ever wanted.

It was as Wesker lifted Rebecca up and sat on the counter beneath the cupboard she had been rooting in, that a noise behind them reminded him they weren't alone. "You know... I could make him watch..." He breathed against her lips, though didn't turn to look at Peter.

Rebecca closed her eyes and shook her head, the very idea making her stomach churn. "No. Please don't. It's no one's business but ours. Not even our pet's."

Wesker couldn't help but smile slightly. "Thoughtful of him, even after what he did to you?" He asked. "You know... When you were unconscious... I may have threaded to make him... Pleasure one of the experiments..."

Rebecca laughed, unable to help herself. "I think that's the nicest thing anyone's ever done on my behalf." She told him, pressing a grateful kiss to the tip of his nose.

"well... That is really rather depressing." Wesker replied, lifting Rebecca up slightly just so he could set her on her feet again. "How about the grand tour?" He asked, offering a hand out to her.

Feeling better about almost everything in general, Rebecca nodded and slid her fingers into Wesker's hand. "I'd like that, as long as you tell me there's another chopper here and the sailboat sank." She teased.
